BOTTLED WATER CAUSES GLOBAL WARMING

Do you know that drinking bottled (spring or mineral) water is one major cause of Global Warming?

Impact of bottled water on Global Warming (Based on latest 2007 figures):
Bottled Water consumed in US and EU 200 billion liters
Greenhouse Gases produced per liter of bottled water 250 gm
Total Greenhouse gases produced in 2007 50 billion kg

Amount of water needed to produce 1 liter of bottled water 5 liters
Bottled Water consumed in US and EU (2007) 200 billion liters
Total volume of water used to produce bottled water  1,000 billion liters

The above figures are based on transporting fancy bottled water from local manufacturing plants and also from the other side of the world to your local shop (e.g. Fiji to Europe and France to USA). Sources: 1.Treehuggers 2. Study

Ban Bottled Water?

Simply demanding that we 'Ban Bottled Water' alone will not work because when a person is thirsty and desperate, lost in the city or in a foreign city, on a hot summer day, with a throbbing headache, he or she will pay anything for a bottle of water, just to quench their thirst. We have to provide a more attractive alternative so that people who want to drink tap water can.

Presently it is very difficult or nearly impossible to find fresh 'green' tap water in the middle of Stockholm, London, Sydney, NY, Seattle or California, in the middle of a hot summer day. It is nearly as difficult to find tap water in the city as it is to find water in the desert in Africa.

To promote drinking of fresh 'green' tap water, we need:

(1) A RE-USABLE CONTAINER. We need a functional reusable tap water container available to everyone. We offer you a specially designed tap water bottle to enable easy filling at the water tap. It minimize spilling and waste of water. Our specially designed bottle can last you years and you can take it with you wherever you go in the world.

(2) A TAP WATER NETWORK. We need a convenient network of fresh clean tap water re-fill points or stations on every street, in all cities with clean fresh green tap water.

Towards that aim, we invite all city councils, government offices, train stations, libraries, airports, hotels, restaurants, food outlets, schools, offices, cinemas, sports centres, stadiums, petrol stations, to join us and provide a global network of green tap water (taps and bottles) to local residents and tourists.

People are more than happy to pay a small amount for clean fresh green tap water.

Is bottled water better?
The Earth Policy Institute (EPI), says Bottled water is often no healthier than tap water, but it can be 10,000 times more expensive, says Emily Arnold, a researcher with the Washington D.C.-based nonprofit.

A new report warns that people's thirst for bottled water is producing unnecessary garbage and consuming vast quantities of energy, even in areas where perfectly good drinking water is available on tap.

  THE FACTS:
  • A person drink an average of 110 liters (nearly 30 gallons) of bottled water per year.

  • 44% of all bottled water originated as municipal water and is sold as ‘purified’ water,

  • It requires between 5.2 and 10.2 million joules of energy to produce 1 litre of bottled water - 2,000 times more energy than 1 litre of clean fresh tap water.
  • Tap water in the US has more stringent treatment standards than bottled water anyway. (Fast Company)
  • The Pacific Institute estimates that the equivalent of more than 17 million barrels of oil were needed to produce these plastic bottles.
  • Among the issues of public concern are

    • environmental issues

    • economical issues

    • social issues

    • waste

    • ground water

    • other packaging containers that hold the bottles

    • labelling, marketing, advertising

    • collection of rubbish

    • landfills

    • the impacts of water extractions on local watersheds

    • equity issues associated with commercializing a public resource

    • the environmental consequences of producing and disposing of plastic bottles, and

    • the energy (and greenhouse gas emissions that result) required to bottle water

  HEALTH FACTS
  • Even when bottled waters are covered by the FDA's rules, they are subject to less rigorous testing and purity standards than those which apply to city tap water.
  • For example, bottled water is required to be tested less frequently than city tap water for bacteria and chemical contaminants.
  •
  • In addition, bottled water rules allow for some contamination by E. coli or fecal coliform (which indicate possible contamination with fecal matter), contrary to tap water rules, which prohibit any confirmed contamination with these bacteria.
  •
  • Similarly, there are no requirements for bottled water to be disinfected or tested for parasites such as cryptosporidium or giardia, unlike the rules for big city tap water systems that use surface water sources.
  •
  • This leaves open the possibility that some bottled water may present a health threat to people with weakened immune systems, such as the frail elderly, some infants, transplant or cancer patients, or people with HIV/AIDS.

Without diseases

If you are travelling to exotic countries or place without treated tap water, boil the tap water, cool it down and pour it into your bottle. You can also purchase water treatment tablets to add to the water. It is safer than drinking local bottled water.
